Anti-theft recommendations This issue started out as a Tomos Targa theft-solver and later developed some good pointers. Info is provided by Detective Hettrick, Madison WI. ..One aspect of the Tomos moped's is the absent fork lock and key ignition switch. We are noticing more Tomos mopeds in operation too. The thieves that were associated with this moped theft case told us they seek out Tomos mopeds to steal because there is no fork lock AND no key ignition switch to disable. Mopeds due to light weight can be carried off fairly easy. As you may know, mopeds of all brands are stolen because of similar weaknesses. If there was any advice for prospective owners or current owners it would be to use the fork lock (if they know of it). Secondly, a secondary lock such as a U-lock is a good idea. I pass this on not to indict Tomos, but for information purposes. Harlan Hettrick Detective University of Wisconsin Police 1429 Monroe St., Madison WI 53711 On another note, some of you may know from experience that the Tomos fork lock is notorious for its easy removal and unreliability, so don't rely solely on the stock anti-theft protection. As this case has shown, the Targa in question has had its lock removed. The moped was later fortunatelly reunited with its owner through engine number tracking.
